Y'all know that I love it when Shawn cooks. He made these Deviled Eggs out of our new cookbook for Memorial Day. We both love a little heat! They weren't too spicy since he seeded the jalapenos. They were very good! This recipe can be found in our Volume 5 cookbook, Mama Sue and Her boys.

Hello friends! Long time, no see.
Did you think I fell off the face of the earth? It has been a whirlwind since we last talked. Let me give you the nutshell version of what we have been doing. We’ve made 2 trips to Louisiana for Chris’ playoff games. We are so proud of him and his team! They came up short in the playoffs and they were eliminated in the semi-finals. It was bittersweet for us all because Chris is retiring from teaching and coaching at the end of this school year, so this was it for him. We are so incredibly proud of the legacy that he has built and the influence he has been able to have with his players. After the game, everyone was standing around and crying, and my precious grandson Bryce summed it up perfectly for all of us. He looked around and said, “Why is everyone crying? Now I get my Daddy back. He can coach my teams and be with us.” If that doesn’t put everything in perspective, then I don’t know what will. People don’t realize the sacrifice that coaches' families make in order for their coach to do their job. I speak from experience here. Harold will even tell you that I basically raised our 2 kids as a single parent because he was always on the football field or doing something with coaching. His former players all love and respect him, and I know he was serving out his calling, however it was often at the expense of his own children.
Speaking of retirement, Amy is also hanging it up at the end of this school year! She has taught for almost 26 years, and she is done. Yesterday, we went to her retirement celebration at her school. She only has 3 more school days and then she is finished! I am excited because she is going to be working for me on a full time basis. She will report to Angela and help out where needed. She feels called to home school her grandson Mason when he starts school, so I can’t wait to see how that plays out. He still has 2 more years of church preschool so I should get a lot of work out of her in the meantime.
Speaking of baseball, our local school (where Amy teaches and coaches and where Harold taught and coached for his whole career) just won the 2A State Championship in baseball! We have had a fun few days going to the games and cheering on our boys. The first game was Monday afternoon, and it came an absolute flood during the game. The grounds crew was watching the radar and got the field tarped just in time. We got SOAKED! I looked like a drowned rat! I had to go to the car, and thankfully I had a Y’all Sweet Tea sweatshirt in there that I was able to change into. Mason was living his best life soaking wet and playing in the rain. I told Amy that I don’t know how in the world she managed to get his white jersey clean, but he had it on the next day ready for game 2. We are superstitious like that. It worked, because our Jackets won game 2 and they are the State Champions! The last time this happened was in 1984 and 1985. The head coach was my best friend, Jane’s husband, Kenny. Harold was his assistant coach. Recently, the school named the baseball field after Kenny in honor of his amazing legacy. How fitting and special that we won the state championship on the very year where they named the field for him!
The garden is still coming along. I will do a whole post about that soon. This is getting to be one of my favorite times of the year. I love working in the garden and growing vegetables. What are you doing lately? Have you been to any ball games? Are you growing a garden? Have you been caught out in any sudden downpours? The best thing about the rain is that it doesn’t last forever. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see a rainbow like we did at the game Monday night. It made getting soaking wet worth it, to be reminded of God’s promise. There is always something good on the other side of our struggles.
